1914年开凿时，挖得古砚一方，背刊“文光射斗”四字，荣德生先生因名之曰“砚泉”。因古汉语中“砚”、“研”相通，故篆书泉名时作“研泉”。

[Research Spring] dug in 1914, people found an ink stone with an inscription “Cultural light reflecting on the star” on its back. So Mr. Rong Desheng named it “Ink stone Spring”. In ancient Chinese, the pronunciation between “ink stone” and “research” are the same, so the spring is called Research Spring.
